Tai O: Watching the Sunset from a Small Boat

Tai O has the most life of any island I visited. Not the polished tourist kind, but real people living real lives.
Stilt houses over water, laundry hanging, old people sitting in the sun. The air smells like salted fish and shrimp paste - strong at first, but you grow to like it.

The Boat Ride

I rented a small boat, drifting through the waterways. The boatman was a local, telling stories as he rowed. He said Tai O used to be lively, now young people have left, only old folks remain.

The Sunset

I sat at the pier watching the sunset. Tai Os sunset is special - no tall buildings blocking, the whole sky turns gold.
In that moment I understood why some people choose to stay. Not because its great, but because it has a slowness you cant find in the city.

A Wish

On the way back, I thought: if someday I could bring someone here, sit at the pier and watch the sunset together, that would be beautiful.
