Po Toi is the southernmost island in Hong Kong. Getting there takes two hours by ferry, and sailings are infrequent.
But the difficulty of getting there adds a sense of ritual to the trip.
The Lighthouse
The white lighthouse stands on the cliff, deep blue sea behind it. I stood there, hair blowing in the wind, but my heart was calm.
Lunch
At the only tea restaurant on the island, I had a bowl of seaweed noodles. The owner was warm, gave me an extra fish ball when she saw I was alone.
The Monk Rock
Walked along the coast to a huge rock carved with Monk Rock. Monks supposedly meditated here centuries ago. I sat on the rock, looking at the sea, imagining the past.
That isolated feeling made me temporarily forget the city noise.
The Ferry Back
Fell asleep on the ferry. Woke up to darkness, Hong Kong lights twinkling in the distance.
From the southernmost tip back to the city center - like passing through a time tunnel.
